AMA Hall of Famer Bessie B. Stringfield

We’d like to take a moment to recognize a very special lady in motorcycle and United States history! Bessie B. Stringfield, A.K.A. “The Motorcycle Queen of Miami”, and also an American Motorcyclist Association Hall of Famer (inducted in 2002), was not only a U.S. Military Motorcycle Dispatch Rider, she also rode cross-country solo, 8 times! Talk about a true motorcyclist! Because February is also Black History Month, we thought it’d be a great idea, for many sentimental reasons, to tell people about her story!

Visit the link below to read about the amazing Bessie:

‘Tis The Season Of Giving

We know there’s a lot of gift giving going on right now, especially because we’re quickly approaching the holiday season, and we’d like to remind everyone that Harley-Davidson has teamed up with Wouned Warrior Project, to join efforts in raising money to support wounded veterans and their families.

Founded in 2003, the 501(c)3 non-profit organization now has over 20 programs operating, and as described in wikipedia, are broken down into 4 categories: Body, Mind, Economic Empowerment, and Engagement. The Body section of the programs focus on “physical health and wellness”, while the Mind section guides our warriors through the “combat stress recovery program”. Economic Empowerment “helps members meet their educational goals and aim to support their personal health and wellness, mental health and career development”, and finally, Engagement, through “the Alumni program provides long-term support and camaraderie for wounded veterans through events, discounted services and an online community.”

Now through January 11th, 2016, stop in and make a contrubtion to Wounded Warrior Project with any of our cashiers! Next to the Parts and Accessories counter, pick up a sticker showing you’ve made an effort to help out the great cause,

WWP 2

and write your name on a dog tag slip so we can hang it on the wall and show off how supportive our community is of our veterans.

WWP 1

They’ve proudly served our country, and Wounded Warrior Project offers the opportunity for us to reciprocate. Happy holidays, from the Avalanche Harley-Davidson family to yours!

Things people did in the 70’s

With our Disco Bike Night coming up this Thursday, we thought it’d be fun to ask people around the dealership what they did for fun in the 70’s. The stereotype is that all things were groovy, almost everyone had an afro, and people still listened to records.

Steven the tech. had fun swimming, camping, and doing stupid kid stuff. He said he was good, most of the time. LOL Justin in Service jammed out to David Bowie and was still riding on the back of his dad’s motorcycle. He aslo said everyone in the family had a different colored rat tail – mom’s was pink, dad’s was blue, and his was purple!

Joe from Parts wasn’t married until ’78, and before that he was haulin kegs up into the mountains to party with his friends. Rotten Jack says Red Rocks hasn’t changed a bit since the 70’s! Jack liked to water ski, chill out at bonfires, and says streaking was still in!

Fit Specialist Big Erv graduated high school, went to college, and spent his days tubing down the Sacramento River! Johnnie B. rode his ’72 Sporty from Colorado all the way to Vegas – during the gas crisis even! He said he ran out of gas on his way back, just after Georgetown – but don’t ask us how he made it home! He wouldn’t spill the beans!

A few of the other guys in the Motorcycle Dept. were just born around then, and say all they really remember is watching Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta in the theatres.

-Man! I feel like I totally missed out by not being born until the 90’s! What else rocked in the 70’s?Image
